3 “Old School” Home Décor Trends that are Coming Back!
When it comes to fashion, one day it’s in and the next it’s out. That goes for home décor as well. Trends come and go with some remaining dominant as others fade away. Luckily, design insiders believe that a resurgence of décor reminiscent of the 1970s and 1980s is coming back around stronger than its initial introduction.
That’s great news for those who have held on to certain furniture pieces or accessories that may have been deemed “unfashionable” in recent years. 3 trends in particular that designers say are coming up fast and hot are black and white for pieces, accessories and flooring, florals and velvet. Yes, velvet.
Obviously personal preference and taste is paramount in the way individuals design and style their homes, but here are some tips on how to incorporate some, if not all, into your home.
Black and white
Black and white has always been a design staple. It provides drama and elegance while refining and anchoring any space. Having white walls with black window and door framing (and doors!) along with hardware can create a modern and glamorous backdrop for softer elements and color. It brings a tailored and juxtaposed look to a colorful room while really allowing the colors to pop. It’s always a fun combination to see in kitchen tiles, in foyers, main living spaces, bathrooms and in rugs as well. You could even paint a beautiful patterned wall in black and white as a feature of the space.
For lighter spaces, keep the walls white with black framing or hardware and accessories. If you want a bolder yet cozier look, paint the walls (or just one feature wall) black and keep the furniture and accessories lighter with pops of color to compliment the space and keep it from feeling dreary.
Florals
The easiest and most fool proof way to incorporate this trend is to get fresh cut flowers from your garden or from the store and display them all around your home. Not only does it visually brighten up a space, but it brings in a wonderful fresh scent to your home.
If you want a more permanent expression, floral wallpapers and drapery are a great option. You don’t have to go with something overwhelmingly audacious and out there, but soft simple designs are a beautiful choice. Of course, if you’re feeling a bit daring, don’t be afraid to go for a louder print! Throw that bold floral wallpaper up and soften the space with monotone furniture and accessories. Throw in some pops of color that compliments the colors on the wall and you’ll have a cohesive space. Wallpaper and drapery is a great way to bring florals into a space without having it completely take over the room.
Velvet
Velvet might seem like something your grandmother would’ve welcomed with open arms, not you. But these days millennials in particular are loving this trend.
Velvet is such a glamorous way to add texture to a space. A beautiful throw pillow or two or even an accent chair upholstered in velvet, is a wonderful way to add drama to a space. Take it a step further and get a statement velvet couch. Like the black and white combination, it’s all about moderation and intention. If you overdue it, it looks tacky and outdated. Keeping it at a minimum makes a space look modern and chic.
You don’t have to be a professional interior designer to style your home in a chic and unique way. Don’t be afraid to try new things with your home décor. Trends are always fun but at the end of the day, they’re only trends. If it doesn’t fall in line with your personal tastes, no big deal. Find pieces that are reflective of your own taste and style in different textures that will last the test of time. Your home is your sanctuary and it should be comfortable, stylish and reflective of your personality and lifestyle.
